Russia Stamps

From Soviet issues to recent Federation sets, a single Yvert numbering that has passed no. 8000.

From the USSR to the Russian Federation

Stamps of the Soviet Union and of the Russian Federation follow one another in the same catalogue. No. 1574/1575 of 1951, on music, and the 1991 set 5870/5872, on birds, are Soviet. After the dissolution of the USSR in December 1991, the numbering carries on without a break: 6040/6047 in 1993, 6497/6508 in 2000, 8095/8096 in 2019.

Space, a favourite subject

The space race keeps returning in Soviet issues. It appears in 1965 with the pair 2953/2954, on the souvenir sheets BF48 of 1967 and BF53 of 1969, then with 4632/4633 in 1979 and 4922/4924 in 1982. The theme continues after 1991, as the 2004 set 6846/6849 shows.

Painting and music

Painting sets are numerous: 2972/2975 in 1965, 3320/3328 in 1967, 3443/3452 in 1968, 3845/3851 in 1972, along with sheets such as BF43 in 1966 or BF178 in 1985. Music has its stamps in 1957 (1920), in 1958 (2028/2030) or with souvenir sheet BF180 of 1985.

Mammals, birds and sea life

Wildlife appears regularly. Mammals have the 1967 set 3265/3271 and a set of fifteen stamps in 2008 (7049/7063). Birds return in 1982 (4913/4918) and in 1990, with the set 5725/5727 and sheet BF214. Sea life has its set in 1983 (5017/5020). The 2004 set 6820/6823 belongs to the endangered species theme, under the WWF logo.

Winter Olympics

Winter sports have their sets in 1998 (6329/6331), 2002 (6609/6611) and 2012 (7297/7300). In 2014, souvenir sheets BF388 and BF390 correspond to the Sochi Games, held in Russia. They also come as varieties, BF388a and BF390a.

Condition and prices

Most listings are for mint never hinged stamps. Some older sets are mint hinged, such as 3265/3271 of 1967, others used, such as souvenir sheet BF150 of 1981. Prices mostly run from one euro to around ten euros. A few older sets go well beyond that, such as 1214/1217 of 1948 on painting. Only the price shown on the listing applies.
