Greece is a southeastern European country comprising the tip of the Balkan Peninsula and many islands of the Mediterranean Sea, the Aegean Sea and the Ionian Sea (including Crete, the Ionian Islands and the islands Cyclades). Greece has borders with Bulgaria, Macedonia and Albania in the north and Turkey in the east.

Greece has been issuing stamps since 1861 (head of Mercury) and in 2011 has celebrated the 150th anniversary of the issuance of its first stamp with a series of 7 values.

Emissions continued through the monarchical and republican periods. Greece is now a Republic since 1973.

The first block-sheet was issued in 1978 on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Hellenic posts.

Greece has been issuing Europa stamps since 1960. Since the 1990s, it has regularly issued a serrated Europa series and a series from a vertically serrated booklet only.
