Bosnia and Herzegovina occupies the territory of the former Federation of Yugoslavia. It is surrounded by CroatiaSerbia and Montenegro.

At the beginning of the Austro-Hungarian occupation, between 1879 and 1918, Hungarian stamps were used in Bosnia and stamps of Austria in Herzegovina. As a result of the occupation, special stamps were issued, without a name of country at the beginning (only recognizable by the coat of arms).

After the Second World War, Bosnia and Herzegovina became part of Yugoslavia until 1991 when its independence was proclaimed. She has been issuing her own stamps since 1992.

The Croatian Republic of Herceg-Bosna is a territorial entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. She has issued her own stamps since 1993.

The Serbian Republic of Bosnia is also a territorial entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina and has also issued its own stamps since 1992 with a first series corresponding to surcharged Yugoslavia stamps.
