French Revolution stamps

One vintage, more or less: 1989

1789 + 200: the year that concentrates the section

The vast majority of the stamps in this section date from 1989, two hundred years after 1789. Only two dates stand apart: a French stamp from 1939 (no. 444), a hundred and fifty years on, and a French series from 1971 (nos. 1678 to 1680). It is therefore less a continuous subject than an event that entered the postal programme of many countries, once.

France and its territories

France publishes in 1989 a series of six stamps (nos. 2564 to 2569) and a famous-people booklet (BC2570), offered mint and used. The overseas territories follow: New Caledonia with five numbers (nos. 579, 597A, PA261, PA262 and their A variants), Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon (nos. 499 to 501 and BF3), the TAAF (PA108 and BF1) and Andorra (no. 376). Several of these issuers chose airmail for the occasion.

Foreign issuers

The French Revolution is also a subject for foreign administrations: Bolivia (no. 732), Portugal (BF67), San Marino (nos. 1215 to 1217) and Guinea (a sheet from PA247 and PA240ND). The theme thus steps outside the national frame to become part of the history of Europe, Latin America and Africa.

Imperforate, sheets and booklet: the sought-after pieces

By far the dearest piece is the TAAF BF1 sheet in imperforate version, at more than a hundred euros. Guinea's PA240ND, also imperforate, and the Guinean sheet from PA247 sit around twenty euros. The sheets from San Marino, Portugal or Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon stay between six and eight euros.

Prices of one to eight euros

Most single stamps and series trade between one and eight euros, the oldest stamp in the section, from 1971, at under a euro. Some pieces are regularly out of stock, which marks a small section in motion. All pieces offered are mint never hinged, except the used booklet.
