Stamps about mammals

From the bat to the blue whale

Over 5,000 species, sorted into four practical groups

With nearly 600 items, this section covers an animal class that includes more than 5,000 known species worldwide. The word "mammal" comes from the Latin for nipple, referring to how the young are nursed, a trait shared by every species in the class alongside lung-based breathing. The shop sorts this collection into four practical, rather than scientific, groups: domestic mammals (farm animals — cows, goats, sheep, rabbits), wild mammals (giraffes, elephants, lions, monkeys, bears, pandas, kangaroos, rodents), marine mammals, and flying mammals.

A single representative for flying mammals

The flying-mammal group stands out for how narrow it is: the bat is its sole representative, no other mammal species having developed powered flight. Series devoted to this sub-group remain correspondingly few compared with the other three, making it a focused search area for anyone specifically interested in it.

Whales and dolphins: a classification shared with marine life

Marine mammals — whales (including the blue whale, the largest living mammal), dolphins, sperm whales, orcas, sea lions, elephant seals — very often end up classified both here and under "marine animals", as shown by Portuguese, Ghanaian and Mongolian series, or a 2026 French souvenir sheet devoted to cetaceans. This dual classification reflects a pattern seen elsewhere on the site: the same animal legitimately belongs to two thematic readings, its zoological class and its habitat.

An occasional overlap with the Red Cross

A 1962 Finnish series illustrates another kind of crossover, less common here than for insects or dogs: it is listed under both "mammals" and "health or Red Cross", echoing the Nordic practice of charity surtax stamps illustrated with animals rather than direct medical subjects.

Formats and price pointers

The collection spans from the 1930s — a 1933 Falkland Islands stamp ranks among the most sought-after items, at €40 — to the most recent issues. Single stamps, complete series and souvenir sheets sit side by side, with a strong presence of African countries (Central African Republic, Guinea, Togo, Mozambique, Niger, Uganda) on wild mammals, alongside polar issues (Greenland, the French Southern Territories) more oriented toward marine mammals.
